Microtel Inn and Suites Boracay
The Microtel Inn and Suites motto is “the same great hotel everywhere you go”. This chain aims to offer high value budget accommodations, or a 4 star hotel at a 3 star price. Their new Boracay resort is located on Diniwid beach at the far end of Station 1. Microtel is one of the few, if not the only chain hotel currently operating in Boracay.
The idea of a budget chain hotel on one of the world’s best white sand beaches may turn some travelers off. It shouldn’t. Many things in the Philippines operate on their own rules turning conventional wisdom on its head. For those of you biased against hotel chains, Microtel will surprise you.
The management of this resort pride themselves on consistency in maintaining a standard of quality across their resorts. All their resorts are built to specifications drawn up by international architects.
Microtel rooms are large, modern, and tastefully decorated and fit well with the beachside surroundings. The standard rooms come with TV, phone, and mini bar? Hot and cold shower with strong water pressure and modern 3 prong outlets. 4 of the standard rooms are located pool and beachside and feature reasonably sized decks to lounge and enjoy the view. All rooms come equipped with Sealy Posturepedic mattresses, which is an impressively rare amenity in Boracay. Mattress and bedding quality is often overlooked even at some of the most expensive resorts on Boracay. Microtel’s bedding was exceptionally comfortable compared to the competition.
The pool and grounds are well maintained and everything is sparkling clean. Diniwid beach is far away from the beach vendors and commotion found in the central resorts, offering vacationers a quite peaceful place to lounge and enjoy the sea. Since the resort is fairly far from central Boracay, Microtel offers free shuttle transportation to and from central beach locations.
The staff was friendly and efficient, and we were impressed by the local managers’ dedication to quality.
The restaurant service and the free breakfast were neither good nor bad. Also disappointing was the Tang that was served with breakfast. This is a mistake that is surprisingly made by several Boracay resorts. When foreigners travel thousands of miles to exotic tropical destinations known for their pineapple and mango exports. They don’t want tang. While in many resorts restaurant quality is not a huge factor, it can be an issue with remote resorts like Microtel where distance from central Boracay makes it a bit difficult to hop out meal. Some guests compensated by ordering delivery service. Other good nearby options include the upscale and excellent Nami restaurant, and the Artista Café.
The amenities are also a mixed bag. The free drinking water, cable channels, and shuttle service was a pleasant surprise. Unfortunately missing was free wi-fi internet. All the more surprising because every Microtel in the US offers free wi-fi.
Conclusion
Microtel Boracay offers some unique benefits to a broad range of travelers. The pool, location and spacious rooms make it a good destination for families. The price to quality ratio makes this attractive for any quality conscious budget traveler. Microtel remote locale with modern accoutrements on a quiet beach is a truly unique offering in Boracay. Microtel offers great value for the price. Travelers who are looking for a truly exotic and rustic atmosphere, as well as active beach party goers may want to look elsewhere.
